crochet project 1: barnacles and octopi

this is what i have been fascinated with lately...
barnacles
barnacles
and more barnacles
...and lots of  octopi
crocheted, that is
ever since i stumbled on some coral reefs crocheted so gloriously, i've been crocheting like crazy. and my work is always evolving.

a couple of days ago, this idea popped into my head to put the barnacles on fabric hoops with some bit of embroidery stitching thrown in. my Mom used to teach me how to embroider when i was in elementary but somehow i never got around to doing anything about it until now. thanks, Mom!

most of the materials i use are found scraps of materials from the thriftstore from past jaunts.
there's just something about using these forlorn scraps and making something that brings a smile to my face. somehow, i find it very joyful to revive and give new meaning to their existence.

i am concurrently crocheting octopi ( to date, i must have already finished about eight of them) and all sorts of crocheted organisms resembling those one might find in a coral reef. it seems i have been inspired by ringo starr's song about wanting to live under the sea in an octopus' garden :) don't we all just love the beatles or what?

here are pictures of my  two works-in-progress. eventually, the pieces will be assembled later on. for now they rest in these cute vessels. the bowls are thriftstore finds, and i just love how the colors blend well together, especially the one in the blue green bowl,  don't you? I am loving my freeflowing style. I am not sure how these pieces will come together just yet, hah!! but i promise it will be smashing!
